Surprise Emotions and Products:YINYANG Chopsticks 2024
In the 2024 Industrial Design Level 3 elective course, we were required to design a product that evokes a sense of surprise. The surprise could come from the product itself or be experienced by users during its use. As a team of three, we designed the black-and-white Yinyang (阴阳) chopsticks within six weeks.

We wanted to start with a seemingly ordinary appearance and create a sense of surprise when the user experiences the tension while using the chopsticks. As the tips begin to curl, they function like a clip, adding an unexpected twist. This is a one-piece chopstick design, with a circular connector in the middle. It also serves as an assistive chopstick, making it suitable for those who are not familiar with using chopsticks or those interested in exploring different forms of tableware.

Its color scheme is inspired by Yin and Yang, represented by black and white, which I derived from the famous Taiji symbol in Chinese culture. In Chinese tradition, Yin and Yang are often associated with complementary forces such as the sun and moon. This concept aligns perfectly with chopsticks—two chopsticks together are far more functional than one alone, and their usage inherently embodies the idea of balance and interdependence.
